GOODBOOKS AWARDS

The GoodBooks Awards is a book award jointly organized by the GoodBooks Initiative, a non-profit cultural and educational project and the IRED Institute, an independent educational organization.

Today, the GoodBooks Awards is regarded as one of Vietnam’s largest independent and civic book awards, distinguished by a selection process that combines scholarly evaluation (professional expertise) with readers’ voting (public engagement).

The mission of the GoodBooks Initiative, established in 2007, is: “To contribute to the advancement of public knowledge and the enlightenment of society through the promotion of good books and reading culture.”

In other words, the GoodBooks Awards seeks to bring valuable and meaningful books closer to the public, while also encouraging more readers to engage with high-quality books. Through honoring and spreading the value of outstanding books, the award also expresses gratitude to authors, translators, and publishers for their contributions in bringing intellectually and culturally significant works to society.

The Enlightening Education Model

Enlightening education, in simple terms, refers to the enlightenment and liberation of the self to become a free individual, avoiding the state of being a person whose fate is predetermined a tool, wild, or enslaved. The common measures of success and happiness in society are "to have"—acquiring wealth, status, and fame…, or "to give"- contributiion and being recognized and praised. People typically choose one of these two ways of living. The Enlightening education model directs learners towards the measure of success and happiness as "to be" - living authentically and being true to oneself. We believe that sustainable success and true happiness are inevitable outcomes when young people engage and live in accordance with their own dignity.

The enlightening education model of the IRED Institute advocates the spirit of “Self-enlightenment” and “Trust in genuine learning,” aiming to help each learner develop themselves in four overarching competencies: "Cultural Competence (Being Human)," "Civic Competence (Being a Citizen)," "Professional Competence (Being a Practitioner)," and "Leadership Competence (Being a Leader)," to become: Free individuals, Responsible citizens, and Outstanding professionals.
