BOOK LAUNCH talk "ENLIGHTENED PEDAGOGY”

The forthcoming book Enlightened Pedagogy: Enlightened Pedagogy: The World, Vietnam, and the Self by Gian Tu Trung presents the author’s personal reflections on education and pedagogy, while also bringing together pedagogical approaches from different historical periods, intellectual traditions, and cultural contexts — from East to West, and from the world to Vietnam. Through these perspectives, readers are encouraged to shape their own pedagogical approaches that are both more effective and more humane within their respective educational contexts.

The author deliberately chooses to focus on “pedagogical methods” because pedagogy lies at the heart of education and remains a central concern for parents, teachers, and educational institutions everywhere. The kind of human beings we aspire to cultivate inevitably requires corresponding pedagogical approaches. According to the author’s educational philosophy, “To teach is to help others learn,” and “Liberation in education means awakening the mind and emancipating human potential.” Consequently, the central task of pedagogy is to help learners become capable of “self-liberation” — that is, to cultivate the capacity to independently awaken their minds and realize their own potential.

In today’s world of learning, the crucial question is not merely how much we know, but rather what we are able to do with what we know. Accordingly, this book also introduces educational principles and pedagogical approaches that schools, teachers, and parents may consider and adapt to their own educational settings, thereby contributing to the improvement of teaching practices and educational development more broadly.

This book is the result of many years of dedicated work by author, educational activist, and Gian Tu Trung, with the support of his colleagues at the IRED Institute. His most recent book, The Pursuit of Truth: A Perspective on Enlightenment in Our Time has been reprinted eleven times. With this latest work, he continues to delve deeply into education and pedagogy in pursuit of the IRED Institute’s mission of fostering the development of Liberal Education in Vietnam.

ABOUT GIAN TU TRUNG (AUTHOR)

Giản Tư Trung currently serves as President of PACE Institute of Management, Principle of the IRED Institute, Vice Chairman of the Phan Chau Trinh Cultural Foundation, Principle of IPL Enlightened Leadership School and Head of the Organizing Committee of the GoodBooks Awards

He earned a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies; completed advanced studies in International Education Policy at Harvard University; received a Doctorate in Education from the National Institute of Education (Singapore); and earned another Doctorate in Education from University College London.

In recognition of his contributions to education, the World Economic Forum honored him as a Global Leader for his role as an educational activist.
