For the first time in Vietnam, the complete Vietnamese edition of the History of Civilization series (45 volumes) by Will Durant will be officially introduced to readers nationwide. Through this monumental work, readers will have the opportunity to explore a vast chronicle of human civilizations spanning 2,500 years of world history.
This publication is not only one of the most ambitious translation projects in the history of Vietnamese publishing, but also a significant contribution to the development of the nation’s culture, civilization, and education.
To complete this 11-part series (each Part consisting of 3–6 volumes, with each volume comprising approximately 400–500 pages), Will Durant devoted nearly half a century of unwavering dedication and scholarly labor. The History of Civilization series achieved remarkable international acclaim, has been translated into numerous languages, published in many countries, and remains an essential collection in libraries around the world as well as in countless family bookshelves.
Over the course of 7 years, the IRED Institute carefully acquired the copyright, organized the translation, and prepared a fully annotated Vietnamese edition of the entire series, with the aim of enabling Vietnamese readers to gain broader access to the major civilizations that have shaped human history.
At this event, IRED Books - an initiative of the IRED Institute - will also introduce the History of the World series (5 volumes) by historians J. M. Roberts and Odd Arne Westad, together with the Vietnamese translation of History of Western Philosophy by philosopher Bertrand Russell. These works collectively provide readers with a broader intellectual panorama of world history, the history of civilizations, and the history of philosophy through valuable historical scholarship.
The translation of world-renowned intellectual works into the national language has long been regarded by many countries as an important cultural undertaking, contributing to the enhancement of public knowledge and to a deeper appreciation of the major civilizations in human history, thereby offering meaningful lessons for both individuals and nations.
This roundtable is intended for all readers who are passionate about books, especially those interested in culture, philosophy, history, religion, and human civilization. It will also serve as an opportunity for scholars and translators to share insights into the research and translation process, as well as the challenges and compelling stories behind the publication of this monumental collection.
