On 28 November 2012, IRED organized a seminar addressing “Current Educational Philosophy in the United States: Images of the Educated Person and the Educational System.” Presenter of this seminar was Dr. David P. Ericson, Professor of Philosophy from University of Hawaii (USA). The seminarattracted much attention from the Vietnamese academic community withabout 80 participants who are faculty from seven universities, institutional researchers,higher education administrators, NGOs representatives and doctoral students.
Professor Ericson delivered a stimulating and insightful speech on the three crucial educational questions: (1)What kind of Persons do we want our children to become; (2)What kind of Lives we want our children to lead; and (3)What do we want our children to Care about?Professor Ericson emphasized the answers to these questionswould determine to what extent the educational system is about – education – or about something else.
This seminar engaged Vietnamese educators in critical conversationsreflecting on the purpose of education. Many participants found the discussion useful as current educational reform is in progress. This was the sixth seminar in the Philosophy of Education seminar series organized by IRED.
