About the Seminar

What is the role of play in early years and primary pedagogy? How can play contribute to learning and how might adults support it? This lecture will explore key global debates around the role of play in early childhood education and early schooling. It will cover the following areas:

• Key issues in the global play debate
• The influence of Western theories of play
• Learning through play
• Play in the current educational policy context in England
• Developing a play-based curriculum
• Examples from research: play pedagogy in the classroom
• Rethinking the relationship between play and pedagogy

About the Speaker

Dr. Sue Rogers is Head of Early Years and Primary Education at the Institute of Education, University of London where she leads a team of experts in curriculum, pedagogy and learning from birth to the transition to secondary education. Her research focuses on pedagogy and curriculum in early years and primary education settings, particularly the interaction between theory and practice in improving outcomes for children through developing pedagogic practice.

She has published widely on play-based learning, policy in the early years and adult-child interactions in classrooms, including three books: Inside Role Play in Early Childhood Education: researching children’s perspectives (2008, Routledge), Rethinking Play and Pedagogy: contexts, concepts and cultures (2011, London) and) Adult Roles in the Early Years, (2012, Open University Press). Her latest book Child Centred Education Reconsidered (Routledge) is due for publication later this year.
