The Relationship between Theory and Methodology in Social Sciences

On 9 August 2013, IRED organized a seminar with a topic: “The relationship between theory and method in social sciences”. This was among the seminar series in theme of Research Career initiated by IRED since the beginning of 2012. The presenter of this seminar was Dr. Tran Huu Quang, Head of the Centre of Ethnic Studies at Southern Institute of Social Sciences (SISS), one of leading researchers in Vietnam. Dr. Tran Huu Quang has also led various research projects focusing on social welfare, urbanization, social institution and gender. More than 60 persons who are faculty from eight universities, researchers from three research institutions, higher education administrators, and master students were engaged in the dialogue of research procedures, research data in social sciences, theory and methodology of research, paradigms of social sciences, the relationship between the researchers and target participants, and related concepts. The discussion was robust and productive when many participants actively shared their practical stories, observations and solutions taking from their research experiences.
